The Travelers Anthem

The Travelers Anthem

“A-a-aye, I’m on vacation
Every single day ’cause I love my occupation..”

The bouncy reggae beat is a stark contrast to the drab and dingy semi-lifeless feel of the nursing home hallways.  In the facility that I am currently working, nearly every member of the rehab team spends a hefty portion of the day commiserating over their mutual disatisfaction.  Today has been an especially disheartening one for my coworkers. At the risk of being a broken record – over-evangelizing the freedom of the travel therapy lifestyle – I decided to change things up and have my normally jolly PTA play what I have deemed The Travelers Anthem.

A smile spreads across his face and the typical twinkle in his eye returns.  While he is not a traveler himself, he understands the message and puts the song on repeat, slides his phone into his pocket, and bounds down the urine tinged hall with his personal soundtrack blaring.

Sometimes we all need a reminder of just how lucky we are.  We get to give people their freedom back!  We teach people how to walk again.  How to regain control and agency over their lives!

It is so easy to let inter-office politics, endless paperwork and protocol, even inter-professional power struggles (This video is just a taste) strip all of the luster from a once meaningful and impactful career path.

What makes the Travel Therapy Lifestyle so incredible is our ability and drive to curate the life that we desire most.  Not only do we get to help clients in amazing ways but we have the flexibility to change and mold our professional lives to run down whichever path we choose.

After all, as the Dirty Heads say: ” If you don’t like your life, then you should go and change it.”

Oh, and: “My life may be crazy. My lack of the lazy has let me do shit that I love on the daily.”

I love travel therapy!

Vacation – by Dirty Heads

A-a-aye, I’m on vacation
Every single day ’cause I love my occupation
A-a-aye, I’m on vacation
If you don’t like your life, then you should go and change it
A-a-aye, I’m on vacation
Every single day ’cause I love my occupation
A-a-aye, I’m on vacation
Every single day, every, every single day
Every single day, every, every single day
Every single day, every, every single day-ay
Everybody sour like a lemon tree
I’m just smiling down upon my enemies
Do this shit, and I love it on the daily
You say you hate your job, but you’ll never leave, never leave
But that ain’t gonna be me, that ain’t gonna be me
My brother called me up said he saw me on TV
I said, “it wasn’t easy, but right now I’m living breezy”
Build this engine from the ground up
Now my hands they ain’t so greasy, feel me?
Chorus
Illuminate my future bright
So thankful for everything
Rejuvenate my inner light
As I work hard for all I need
Open arms, embracing life
And all of which you gave me
Hard work, it pays off
I’m happy now, it’s paying me
Close my eyes sometimes it feels as if I go away
I love the life I live and enjoy the ride along the way
“I make a living out of living,” yeah, that’s what I say
I’ve got one life to live, and I wouldn’t live it no other way
Chorus
Van Gogh in my earlobe
I can’t hear, I’m here though
I may be a weirdo, but this is my year, yo
My life may be crazy
My lack of the lazy
has let me do shit that I love on the daily
Daily, daily
Get to do this shit I love upon the daily
Daily, daily
Everybody go and live your daydreams up
A-a-aye, I’m on vacation
Every single day ’cause I love my occupation
A-a-aye, I’m on vacation
If you don’t like your life, then you should go and change it
A-a-aye, I’m on vacation
Every single day ’cause I love my occupation
A-a-aye, I’m on vacation
Every single day, every, every single day
Every single day, every, every single day
Every single day, every, every single day-ay
