Trying to find the right DSLR camera is a tough task. But finding one that can keep up with the two of us felt link an impossible challenge. Why? Because most cameras that can withstand single digit temperatures, jostling in the back of a pack, sideways rain, and blowing sand begin at a price point of well over $1,000.
Fortunately, I came across the Pentax K-50 16MP Digital SLR Camera (White). The Pentax K-50 is a weather sealed camera that has built-in image stabilization as well. This means, that not only will it handle the beating of a trail run or mountain hike, but it internally will reduce any shaking that your pounding heart may stir up.
I have used this camera with both the Pentax DA 40mm f/2.8 Lens and often the Pentax SMC DA 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 ED AL Bundle. The 40mm pancake lens is about the size of a lens cap and is perfect for situations where size and weight is limited, and being f/2.8 it takes some pretty wonderful shots. However, the 18-135 F/3.5-5.6 lens is my go to lens for all of our travels. It has great clarity and range of focus for being one of Pentax’s lower end lenses.
This camera has been on countless mountain tops in all types of precipitation and has never let me down. There is no better camera on the market that can match the functionality and image quality for the value. At $295 it is nearly a third of the cost of similarly equipped DSLRs.
For anyone who is interested in a starter camera, or a burly adventure ready tool the Pentax K50 is tough to beat!
Call for comments: We are currently looking for a small mirrorless camera that is more portable than our beloved Pentax K50. Any suggestions would be helpful!
